2013 May 21 The Importance Of HumilityFrom the message this past weekend, we wanted to "zoom in" on the portion about humility. A number of people have asked for the list of nine questions presented, and so we've pulled an excerpt from the manuscript for you here.
Enjoy!
Getting low before the Lord is the first and most important part of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. It’s a theme that’s emphasized in the Bible over and over again. Jesus himself was humble. Humility is a fruit of the Spirit. The Apostle Paul told the Ephesians to “be completely humble and gentle.” (Ephesians 4:2) The Apostle James said, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” (James 4:10) The Apostle Peter said, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand...” (I Peter 5:6)
Humbling yourself, getting low before the Lord, is so critical to the life of the believer and, at the same time, so thoroughly counter-cultural that a lot of people who profess to follow Christ don’t know the first thing about it.
There’s an old book by Jeremy Taylor, written in the fifteenth century, which talks about the practice of humility. Even though it is more than four hundred years old, it’s some of the most practical advice I’ve ever read on the subject. Taylor offers nine suggestions. I give them to you here in the form of a question. I’d encourage you to get this list, take a question a day and ask God to search your heart.
Here are the questions:
1. Do you think better of yourself because you’re better at something than someone else?
2. Do you understand that humility is not about criticizing yourself, or wearing ragged clothes or behaving like a doormat?
3. If you want to be humble and you know you’re unworthy than why are you angry when others agree with you?
5. Do you often go fishing for praise or compliments from others?
6. Do you actively resist pride? Some people spend their time dreaming of greatness. They are driven by their fantasies of wealth, power and recognition. Taylor says that all of this is nothing but the fumes of pride exposing their heart’s true wishes.
7. Do you take an active part in the praising of others?
8. Do you compare yourself with other people? Taylor says that you should never compare yourself with others unless it is to advance your impression of them and lower your impression of yourself.
9. Do you regularly try to excuse all your mistakes?

2013 May 16 Hearing God's Voice - A SummaryFrom my message this weekend, I mentioned that I'd share more on hearing God's voice. So, here is a practical summary of the sources and principals of hearing God's voice from me. Enjoy!
- Mark
Hearing God’s Voice Sources and Principles The 4 Wells of GuidanceScripture teaches that God speaks to us through 4 main sources.
Things I’ve learned about the Voice of GodPrinciple #1 - When I am listening for the Lord's voice, I am listening for spontaneous thoughts.
Principle #2 - God's voice often causes a special reaction within me. I feel this sense of excitement orconviction or joy. It's not just that there's a spontaneous thought but something inside confirms that it is God. It resonates in my spirit and I say, "Yeah, that's it. This isn't just me, this is God." There's thisconfirming "YES" in my spirit.
Principle #3 - God's voice often comes in response to a question.
Principle #4 - God's voice is often light and gentle and will be easily cut off by my analysis or self-exertion. I have found that it easy for me to crush, to trample down the voice of God by analyzingwhat he has said, probing for every detail, or trying to interpret everything I hear instead of just takingit at face value and letting God be God. If God tells me to lay hands on and pray for somebody, I don'talways need to know why, I just need to do it and let God take care of the rest. There are times whenI've gotten something and I put my jaws in to it and started picking it apart, and analyzing it and it wasjust gone. We value being naturally supernatural. We want the voice of God to be a natural part of ourdaily lives.
Principle #5 - God's voice often has a surprising content. It is better and often different than mythoughts. I need to say that I have found the voice of God to be much more gentle, much more loving, and compassionate than I could possibly be. That's one of the ways I know it is Him, it just seems totake me to new levels of compassion, new levels of understanding, new levels of love for people, beyond my capacity to love.
Summary: So the voice of God is this flow of spontaneous, intersecting thoughts, like impressions thatwould cross your path. Gentle, light, surprising impressions that you know could not be you. That'swhat God's voice sounds like. I also believe that God speaks through dreams, he speaks through visions;he speaks through visual impressions, even film-like impressions.

No. But growth is not optional for us as Christians. It’s a command. Matthew 28:19-20 contains Jesus’ command to “Go and make disciples.” An example is found in Acts 2:41, “…and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.” God wants everyone in greater Kansas City to be saved. As long as there are people who don’t know Christ, we should be willing and eager to grow. Our goal is to reach them all! But you need to know, this is not a church growth campaign. We’re more interested in growing the Kingdom of God regardless of where folks choose to attend church.
Our approach to ministry is fully explained in the Vision Brief. New facilities are just a means to better reach into people’s lives. This project is all about people, the people who currently attend Vineyard and the people in our community who do not yet know God.
A church’s size does not determine whether or not it is personal. In fact, only when a church is personal and relational does it grow! The connection of individuals to each other promotes intimacy. People are attracted to that. It’s not our desire to build a monument or grow for the sake of numerical growth. However, we are wholeheartedly committed to reaching the unchurched and discipling them in the faith, and we cannot do this without growing.
Our goal is to be organized in such a way that relationships continue to grow no matter our size. We’re emphasizing small groups to foster relationship, accountability, the use of spiritual gifts and the practical application of God’s Word. Every single person at the Vineyard needs an opportunity to know others and to be known. Whether we have 400 or 4,000 in our church family, we will remain committed to this goal.
If we’re a healthy church, we will grow in maturity and in size. That means there will be many people here whom you will not know personally. Studies tell us that most people only know about 67 people with any depth, no matter what the size of the church. So we don’t expect you to know everyone, or for everyone to know you. But you should know someone!
We are not interested in building something glitzy, gaudy or extravagant. We continue to strongly value simplicity in all that we do, whether architecture, dress, verbal expressions or worship. But we desire that ourfacilities be aesthetically pleasing and approachable. We want the newly renovated building to enhance our ministry goal of making new disciples. So while our emphasis is functionality and simplicity, we want our building to be attractive as well.
That's everything you can find in the Renovation FAQ. I wanted to break it out and cover it all in smaller bites, and I hope this has been helpful for you in undertsanding what we're doing.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
