A Sword for God and for Gideon

Your Children Will Learn: Gideon listened to God. You can listen to God, too.

Memory verse for unit 11- God you give strength to my heart. You are everything I will ever need. Psalm 73:26b

Just for Parents -
For the last several months, your children have been learning about how God chose to help and save His people. It was a huge task! Moses, Joshua and Gideon really questioned whether or not God had chosen the right person to accomplish the task. You have been given the important task of loving your children and sharing the good news of Jesus with them. At times you may feel like you are on a battleground rather than in your own home. Remember that God is with you and will give you strength. He is equipping you with all that you need for that which He has called you to do. Do you trust Him to do that? Just like God helped Moses, Joshua, and Gideon, ask God to help you be a strong, trusting parent.

Monday - Read & Do

Read Judges 7:1-8, 16-22. Ask your child: “Did Gideon do what God asked him to do? Has God ever asked you to do something? What was it?”

Tuesday - Art

Make a “fire jar” by decorating a small, clean jar. Any plastic container with a lid will do. The more transparent, the better! Decorate your “fire jar” with stickers and Sharpie pens. Glue sequins all over the lid. Talk about Gideon and his army who used jars and torches in battle. They said, “A sword for God and for Gideon!”

Wednesday - Pray & Praise

There’s an old Sunday school song that goes like this:
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine (3x)
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
Sing the song together with your children. Talk about the little light Gideon and his army used. Ask your child, “What was their light called?”

Thursday - Out & About

Go outside and play a game of “Follow the Leader.” Try to do what the leader does. After you have played the game, say, “Gideon listened to God and did what God told him to do. Then Gideon said to his 300 men, “Watch me; do what I do.” Pray that you will do what God wants you to do this week.

Friday - Play
Set up a bunch of dolls, army men and toy people. Pretend they are Gideon’s army. Find a basket and “send some home” by tossing them into the basket. God is so big He defeated the enemy army with only Gideon and 300 men. Talk about how Gideon listened to God and so can we!
